What Grows in the Garden?

Teach your children how to identify what grows and lives in the garden on April 21, from 9:30 – 11:30am. Bringing her child friendly horticultural lessons from the New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy is Rye’s favorite school garden creator, Anne Mottola. She and her sister Maria Mottola, a deft illustrator and member of the Art Students League, have launched their first trio of children’s books with NYBG Press, collectively called “Wonders in the Garden.” Anne will read from these engaging and whimsically drawn books and teach kids why kohlrabi is one of the coolest vegetables they can grow! FREE! Suitable for ages 4 – 8. Please RSVP to Barbara Specht

Anne Mottola was born and raised on Long Island, NY. Anne started gardening as a child, alongside her father who grew up on a farm and worked most of his life as a teacher. Anne graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in Social Work from Fordham University’s School of Social Welfare. Anne’s professional career began with twelve years working in child-oriented social service agencies. In addition to her work at NYBG, Anne is an instructor for Kaleidoscope Garden Design, LLC in Westchester, NY, and the lead garden instructor for the school garden she created and maintains at Osborn Elementary School in Rye, NY. Anne is a freelance graphic designer, a tutor to elementary age children, and a very proud mom.  Anne enjoys most fruits and vegetables, in particular, snap peas and granny smith apples.
