George Harmon Joins JHC Advisory Board

It is with great pleasure that we announce the addition of George Harmon to our Advisory Board. George helped us launch Revolutionary Westchester 250 in 2018 recounting how his own love of history was instilled in him by his father John Harmon, Director of the Afro-American Cultural Center. John was Co-Chair of the Planning Committee for the First Rhode Island Regiment dedication in Yorktown in 1982 that championed the idea of securing a place for Black members of the regiment in Revolutionary War history. As we continue planning for America 250, George’s insights and experience will be invaluable.

George was born in Manhattan, raised in the Harlem and the Bronx, NY, and has lived in Westchester County for the past 40 years.  He has an extensive background in human resources,  employee relations, conflict resolution, diversity and general management.

He began his employment history as an Employment Interviewer and Job Developer at the New York State Department of Labor after graduating as a Political Science major from CCNY.  He was recruited from the NY State Department of Labor by the Urban League of New York City where he was Director of The Skills Bank and later as its Director of Employment and Training programs.  During his tenure at the Urban League he consulted with a number of major corporations including American Airlines, Pfizer, Chase Bank, Young & Rubicam and several public and private not-for-profit organizations including the New York City Board of Education.

Haskins & Sells, then Deloitte Haskins & Sells, Deloitte & Touche, and now Deloitte was Mr. Harmon’s next step in his career progression, and during this time period he was heavily involved in college relations and recruiting, industrial and background security, equal employment opportunities and employment investigations.  During this time period he was elected to head the New York City Human Resource Council.

In the next iteration of his career, Mr. Harmon joined the American Management Association and as Director of Personnel he was responsible for employment recruiting, employee relations, affirmative action, training, performance management, compensation and organization behavioral issues.  He appeared in TV ads on behalf of the President’s Committee on Hiring People with Disabilities.

In 1993, Mr. Harmon returned to Deloitte as part of a special National Talent Relations and Employee team that conducted major investigations including sexual harassment and performance management training. As a Personnel Director and later as Senior Manager he is certified in Employment Law and Harassment issues by the Employment Learning Innovations, Violence Risk Assessment & Management by Factor One, Essentials of Employment Law and Conflict Resolution Skills by Cornell University. In a later role at Deloitte he was appointed Senior Manager of Diversity for the Northeast Regon of the firm where Deloitte has been recognized numerous times for being a top employer because of its Diversity and Women Initiatives.

He also has been recognized on two separate occasions as a Harlem YMCA Black Achiever in Industry by both The American Management Association and Deloitte.  He was also named The Harlem YMCA Volunteer of Year in 2010, and recognized by Rutgers University as one of its Top New Jersey Achievers due to his contributions to their WINGS program where Rutgers collaborated with Deloitte in mentoring Rutgers women college students by matching them with Deloitte Senior female partners and Senior managers.

He established his own consulting firm GB Harmon Consulting upon leaving Deloitte in 2011 specializing in the areas he worked in over his career.  As an aside, early in his career he formed a promotions and entertainment company GLC Inc. which was the first promotion company to bring the world renowned Earth, Wind and Fire to perform in concert at Madison Square Garden.  And, in his spare time Mr. Harmon had managed to squeeze in being an Adjunct Professor of Human Resources, Management and Organizational Behavior at Mercy College, Marymount College and Fordham University, Manhattanville College and The French Institute of Management.

He has his BA from CCNY in Political Science and Administration and an MBA in Management from Fordham University.
