On Saturday, March 23rd State Senator Shelley B. Mayer lauded women leaders in Westchester County. She hosted her 3rd Annual Women’s History Month Celebration honoring women from the 37th Senate District. The event took place at the Rye Arts Center.
Each individual or organization has made significant contributions to the community over many years. The 5 selected were the American Women of African Heritage, Inc. (Senate Resolution J739) - AWAH President Francine Shorts accepted the award on behalf of everyone in her organization; Judy Troilo (Senate Resolution J740), The LOFT: LGBT Center; Clare Murray (Senate Resolution J741), Community Center of Northern Westchester, Executive Director; Carmen Lopez di Linero (Senate Resolution J742), Don Bosco Community Center; Director of the Food Pantry & Soup Kitchen; Executive Director; and Suzanne Clary (Senate Resolution J743), Jay Heritage Center, President of the Board of Trustees.
The special event opened with a short video by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. Hochul personally congratulated each of the honorees for demonstrating visible advocacy for other women throughout Westchester County (Watch video here). Sen. Mayer followed with remarks about the history of women’s suffrage emphasizing the continuing urgency for education and equal opportunities for women. The honorees were then each given proclamations from the NY State Senate, NY State Assembly, Westchester County Executive and Board of Legislators, along with the city of Rye and town of Tuckahoe.
