From raking leaves to harvesting weeds for eating! Volunteers turned out in force for the 2019 I Love My Park Day. They cleared Shady Lane of wet debris and made it more beautiful for pedestrians, runners and dog owners who stroll through our park every morning.
After a morning of planting annuals, archaeology and trail cleaning, volunteers learned from renowned forager Tama Matsuoka Wong of “Meadows and More” how a field of invasive garlic mustard and stinging nettle may look like a mess to one person but be a banquet to another! Not only did everyone pull out invasives to make room for native species, they also learned about tasty recipes to try with non-native plants.
Everyone celebrated with ice cream from Jimmy’s Soft Serve afterwards! Thank you to all the scout groups, Con Edison volunteers, Mamaroneck Youth Group, Rye Togetherhood Project and many more as well as our Volunteer Chair Caroline Wallach, Board members and tremendous staff!
